Disappointment

  You can see the disappointment on her face.   She sits motionless watching the screen...pouting.  Having just lost an argument with me about attending Zoom for the day, she is punishing me by not speaking.  Her friends, her people, her adored teacher, are so so close...yet they are so far away.  Class was never meant to be taken in tiny little boxes on Chromebook screens.  School is to be experienced, and felt and lived.   A fluid experience.  She is desperate to be an active participant, not a sidelined observer.   I close my eyes and I can still see her in the classroom.  She is laughing with her friends, busily writing in her journal while examining a leaf under a microscope.  I watch as she raises her hand and approaches the front of the class.  She stands proudly and shares her journal drawing of her observations.  Courage, bravery, the feeling of a job well done.  Remote learning offers none of those accomplishments.  It is nothing more than a bandaid put on a wound that needs
